Custom and pool domains

A campaign’s URL, a postback URL and the lander script are served from a tracking domain. Every workspace has two kinds to choose from.

Every workspace has a default subdomain, <your workspace slug>.<pool domain>, on a domain the platform owns. It works as soon as the workspace is active: there is nothing to set up. Your slug is fixed when the workspace is made; the portal shows the full address. Pool domains are shared by every workspace.

A domain of your own keeps your tracking URLs under your name. Only the workspace’s owner adds, changes and removes domains, under Setup, Domains. Your plan limits how many you can have.

  1. Add the host, such as trk.yourdomain.com. It must be a name (lower case; an internationalized name is stored in its ASCII form), not an IP address, a public suffix, or a pool domain or any name under one.

  2. Add the two DNS records the portal shows, at your DNS provider:

    • a CNAME from your host to the target the portal names;
    • a TXT record, at the name and with the value the portal names, which proves you control the host. Neither is a secret: both are published in DNS.
  3. Wait for the checks. The portal shows the domain’s status:

    StatusMeaning
Pendingwaiting for the records. Tallyray checks every minute for an hour, then hourly for a day.
Verifiedboth records found; the certificate is being issued automatically (ACME, HTTP-01).
Activeserving, with a certificate that Tallyray renews at two thirds of its life.
Failednot verified within a day, or its certificate could not be issued. The reason is shown. Check tries again.

You can also press Check to check the records now. A failed domain becomes pending again.

  4. Use it. Once active, pick it when you copy a campaign’s URL, a postback URL or a lander script tag, and for a page’s domain.

Good to know:

  • Several workspaces may have the same host pending, each with its own TXT value. The first to verify holds the name; the others fail with domain_taken. A workspace that does not control a host’s DNS cannot keep it from the one that does.
  • An active domain whose renewal fails stays active until its certificate expires, and shows the error.
  • The certificate’s private key never leaves the edge servers.
  • Root redirect: a request for / on your domain answers 404 unless you set a root redirect to an https URL.
  • Removing a domain stops it serving at once, and every campaign URL on it with it. Change the URLs in your ads first.

A campaign has no domain of its own: the same campaign key works on any of your active domains and on your default subdomain. You choose the domain when you copy the URL. A postback URL uses the domain you pick when you copy it.

A workspace that is suspended, or still waiting for its first payment, answers its tracking domains with a refusal and takes no visits: see Plans and billing.
